What To Expect in 2nd Grade!

Handbook and other important forms

Morning Assembly- Morning announcements, prayer, and the pledge of allegiance will begin each day in the gym at 7:50.  Students will be acknowledged and prayed for on their birthdays as well at this time. They will also receive a non-uniform pass for their birthday. Students are considered tardy when the 8:00 bell rings.  Please refer to the St. Joseph School handbook for the policy regarding repeated tardiness and study hall.

Homework- Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday.  It is an extension of what we are learning in class and it is important that your child completes it and returns it the next day.  They will bring home two sheets of math homework each night (one fact sheet and one with varying concepts).  On Wednesdays they will have one piece of math and one grammar sheet.  Grammar homework will cover the topic we’re focusing on for the week and will help prepare them for the English quiz on Friday.  Students will bring home their reading books every weekend, I would like for your child to read you the story that we have been reading throughout the week.  Please have your child choose a book of their choice and read at least 10 minutes every night!!

Grades- Grades will be taken on some homework, quizzes, and weekly assessments in reading and math.  Chapter tests will be given in Religion, Science, and Social Studies.  In these three subjects study guides will be sent home 2 days prior to tests.  If a paper is sent home with a percentage grade that indicates that a grade was recorded in my grade book.  All tests and graded work will be sent home in the white home-school envelope on Fridays.

Accelerated Reader- Students will have the opportunity to take A.R. tests throughout the day.  The computers in the classroom allow them to take a test at anytime; they may also take them in the computer lab on Thursday and/or Friday.  I highly encourage them to take at least one A.R. test a week of a book that they have independently read.          I have a large collection of A.R. books in the classroom that they can choose to read at D.E.A.R. time (Drop Everything And Read).  If you would like for me to send home a few books on their level please let me know!  The entire Accelerated List can be found on our school website.

Spelling Words- Students will be introduced to new spelling words every Monday with a pre-test.  Their list will be in their folders Monday afternoon.  They will work with these words through various activities in their spelling workbooks throughout the week. Spelling tests will be given on Friday.  ·        If your child gets all of the words on the pre-test correct they will be given the challenge list for the week.  These words will follow the same rule as the other list and will be sent home on Monday.

Make-up Work- If your child is absent, I will make every effort to send home any make-up work.  If you’d like to pick it up the day they are absent you can do so in the office after lunch.

Birthdays- We will celebrate birthdays with a simple birthday treat during lunch or after recess.  You are welcome to send in cupcakes, cookies, doughnuts, etc.  We have 23 students and one teacher with a sweet tooth!!

Snack- If your child would like to have a snack during the day please send one in with them each day.  They will be kept in their backpacks until a designated snack time. Our snack time is usually around 9:15 each morning. Suggestions: granola bars, crackers, fruit snacks, apples, etc. No drinks please.

Class Parties-We will have two parties this year.  We’ll have one for Christmas and the other for Valentine’s Day.  My room moms will contact people for food, small prizes, game workers, etc!

Field Trips- In second grade we have wonderful field trips!  In the fall we will spend a day at Lost River Cave and in the spring we go to Safety City!  We may also see one or two performances at the Capital if they are age appropriate.  I will see the descriptions of the productions offered later in the year.

Conferences- Throughout the school year if you ever feel the need to schedule a conference please do not hesitate to call me or send in a note.  I will be more than happy to meet with you.  I feel that a strong parent-teacher partnership is important to the success of every student.   * I will continue to keep in contact throughout the school year.  Look for my weekly Friday Note which will be in the home-school envelope.  Thank you so much for your support and dedication to our school.  I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work with your child this year!

Second Grade Curriculum Outline

Religion- The religion textbook we will be using this year is published by Silver Burdett and titled “Blest Are We”. Daily prayer, scripture sharing and participation in weekly Mass are also included in our religion curriculum. *School Masses will be on Tuesday mornings at 8:05.

Language Arts- (Reading, Grammar, and Spelling) The area of literacy includes reading, writing, speaking and listening. Our curriculum offers a plethora of ways to encompass these functions with our language. We will be using the Treasures reading series by MacMillian Mc-Graw Hill publishing. This series will offer the students practice in vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, spelling, and writing through daily activities and workbook practice. The students will also be writing a “portfolio piece” every week. Other ways reading is embedded into our program include D.E.A.R. time (Drop Everything and Read) which is a silent reading time that we will have after lunch each day. The students will also be engaged in several shared readings with short stories and poems, read alouds, guided reading, and independent reading assessments such as Accelerated Reader. We will be having weekly spelling and reading assessments. Cursive handwriting will be introduced in the fall.

Math- We will be using the Saxon math program this year. The students began the second grade program last year in first grade therefore we will continue with the second grade lessons. When the second grade program is completed we will begin the third grade Saxon program. This comprehensive math program integrates the use of manipulatives to develop visual and logical intelligence. This program encourages continual practice of various math concepts through daily guided class handouts and nightly homework pages.

Science- We will be using a Harcourt Science textbook. Units of study include chapters focusing on life, earth, and physical science. We will be conducting various science experiments to expand our lessons. They will be working in a science workbook to help with the vocabulary and understanding of new concepts. Students will be given chapter tests at the end of each chapter to assess their knowledge gained.

Social Studies- We will be using a Harcourt-Brace Social Studies textbook to lead us in this broad subject. Second grade will focus on learning how to read and use maps, study about people in our world, recognize how people to work together, acknowledge and learn about historical events, and they will learn about different cultures throughout the world. Chapter tests will be given at the conclusion of each chapter.

Special Area Classes-The students will also be participating in special area classes each week. They will have Music, P.E., and Computer Lab twice a week. The other special area classes include Library, Art, and Spanish which will meet once a week.

I hope this provides a good overview of what we will be doing in second grade this year. Procedures may change throughout the year as I become more familiar with the students and their individual needs. I am confident I can offer your child an exciting, challenging, and successful year! I encourage you to contact me at anytime with questions or concerns.
