How Grades Are Earned Just a reminder about how grades are given in music class. Each day of music, your child may earn up to 10 points for participation. As long as your child is staying on task, listening to directions and taking an active role in the day's activities, they will earn all ten points. Each time I have to stop and remind them to get back on task, they will lose 1-2 points. Periodically there will be playing tests over material covered. These tests/quizzes can range from 25 to 100 points depending on the activity. Classes will sometimes work at the computer on specific music skills. These programs have a quiz or activity that is scored. Those scores can be a grade as well. Rarely, we will have a written test to cover material such as music symbols/notation (3rd grade) or Instrument Families (4th/5th grade). When a written test is given a study guide will be sent home weeks in advance. Music is something that needs to be experienced. God did not make everyone a master musician, but He did give us the ability to appreciate music and always try out best. As long as students always give their best effort in my room, they will succeed. My prayer is that they will leave St. Joseph School with a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the power of music.
Modern Music Masters
Each quarter the students in 4th-8th grade may earn Modern Music Masters recognition. In order to achieve this honor, the student must earn an A and have a conduct of 1 for the quarter. There will be a special recognition of all students that achieve Modern Music Masters all four quarters.
About Mrs. Young I grew up in Northeast Pennsylvania and moved to Nashville, Tennessee when I was a sophomore in high school. I came to WKU in the fall of 1986 and have been in Bowling Green ever since. I have Bachelor of Music and a Masters of Music Education from WKU. (GO TOPS) My other job is the Minister of Traditional Worship at State Street United Methodist Church. I have worked at SSUMC since the fall of 1992. I am married to Trent Young and we have one daughter, Allie, who is a 4th grader at St. Joe. This year, I begin my 16th year of teaching music. I began teaching in Ohio County for four years and then I taught in Warren County for 3 years. When my daughter turned one, I realized that I was missing way too much of her life and luckily the part-time job at St. Joseph opened. I have now been teaching at St. Joe for 9 years and have loved every moment of it. I have always enjoyed sharing my love of music, but am happiest when that love of music also leads students to a love of praising God with their music.
